Chueca is a neighborhood or barrio, one of many, in the center of Madrid. It was named after Francisco Chueca and its plaza and surrounding streets are considered home to the LGBTQ community in Madrid and del mundo.
As I have found in life, labels don’t necessarily define a person, a home, neighborhood or city. Chueca is a vibrant barrio that welcomes all, is a center of culture, fashion and dining in Madrid that I’ve been blessed to stay in many times. Diversity, security and community….
The way we can travel and integrate into a neighborhood has changed so much since I first visited Madrid over 30 years ago. Technology and sites such as Air BNB have made it possible to step out of your doorway, just as if you live there.
This past week, (not sure if it was my clothes, my confidence, my familiarity) I had 3 different groups of Spaniards (not from Madrid) ask me for directions and the last was a couple asking for the Bar “Cage”!!! I’ve arrived!
