Calles…

The familiar ale hop cow… my daughter’s favorite-always properly adorned & hoping you’ll ring her bell!

Madrid is a city that invites, no begs you to walk; day or night the streets are both crowded with people, (from all over the world) or nearly empty and so clean & peaceful its hard to believe that in the center (el centro) almost 200,000 live amidst thousands more that work and visit in an overall Metropolitan area of 9 million.

Yet…the streets are clean and the windows & doors are often adorned with flowers and other decor over head. With jet-lag I am often up the first few days well before dawn and from below I hear the whistling and singing of delivery persons and street cleaners.

Calle d tamayo y baus

There is a pride, not just in Madrid, but throughout Spain, in many that work and live here. Shopkeepers are found in the mornings with mops & buckets; even those that work at the most chic boutiques-mopping the sidewalks. I have never seen anyone dressed to the nines in heels mopping the sidewalk in the US?

Calle Barbieri (19)

We are all creatures of habit; some good, some not so. A year ago I was fortunate enough to be the 1st guest at a lovely couple’s apartment in Chueca and this year I returned again. Very peaceful, very zen; filled with plants and Baliesque decor. Two balconies overlooking the street and a 20 sq. meter terraza at the rear; if they would let me I’d buy it tomorrow or today!

Within 2 blocks you will find shops, restaurants, the Metro, historical buildings and oh…Mercado San Anton. A true market hall to eat in (including a rooftop restaurant), take out oh and….a special spot for man’s best friend to rest while you shop.

Do you have a favorite street? What’s it like?Perhaps the one you live on/
